Understanding Depression to Rediscover Joy
Depression is more than just the blues. When you are depressed, you may lack interest in things you used to do. It can be difficult to get up the energy to simply get out of bed or take care of your appearance or your home. You may sleep too much or not be able to get to sleep at bedtime. It may be difficult to focus at school or at work. Your thoughts may return to ‘I’m worthless, I’ve failed’, etc. You may have guilty feelings dominate your days. You may even dwell on death or have considered taking your own life to end the pain. Some people who are depressed come across as angry or hyper.
Depression is like the common cold of mental health because it is seen so often. However, depression is treatable. A combination of psychotherapy (counseling) and possibly antidepressant medication can help you feel better and discover the joy in life.
Recognizing the Signs of Depression and Embracing a Journey of Healing and Hope
Recognizing the signs of depression is crucial for early intervention and support. It is important to seek professional help so you can receive compassionate support for any of the following symptoms:
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions
- Fatigue and decreased energy
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and/or helplessness
- Feelings of hopelessness and/or pessimism
- Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping
- Irritability, restlessness
- Loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable, including sex
- Overeating or appetite loss
- Persistent aches or pains, or stomachaches
- Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” feelings
- Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts

The Hidden Battles of Anxiety
Anxiety is more than simply feeling nervous. When a person has an anxiety disorder, they have intense tension, have frequent worries, and can have physical health issues, such as an increase in blood pressure. They can experience dizziness, an increase in heart rate, sweating, and shaking or trembling.
A person who is anxious has intrusive thoughts; even if they try to distract themselves, their mind goes back to topics that they apparently cannot easily shake off. They tend to avoid places and situations out of concern that ‘something bad’ may happen. Sometimes the symptoms of anxiety are nearly constant, but often the anxiety is ‘quiet’ at times, flaring up when the person comes in contact with some sort of trigger.
Our Diverse Range of Treatment Approaches
The following are the names (diagnoses) that your mental health professional or medical provider may use to describe the type of anxiety you may have:
- generalized anxiety disorder (GAD),
- obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD),
- panic disorder,
- post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and
- social phobia (or social anxiety disorder).

Understanding and Thriving with ADHD
ADHD (Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder) is a condition that affects children and adults. More than being simply a sign of an ‘energetic kid’, ADHD symptoms include an inability to focus for more than a few moments at a time, impulsivity to the point of danger, and an apparent ‘need’ to be in such constant motion that others around the person with ADHD are frequently frustrated.
Contrary to popular opinion, a person with ADHD is sometimes able to actually sit still, focus, and ‘be good’ while playing a very engaging video game or involved in a hobby or job that is full of very interesting stuff (like flying a plane for an experienced pilot). This is because people with ADHD can ‘hyper-focus'—tune out the whole world for the fun stuff. The only trouble with this is that much of the world is rather dull. Schools cannot compete with how fun the popular video games can be, and many jobs are full of routines that are sometimes tough for the average person to put up with, let alone the trouble an ADHD person can have with repetition and boredom.
This simple test is a way to help you determine if you or your child have ADHD. If it turns out that you may have attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, contact us at River Park Psychology Consultants; we can help.
